Make Your Own {breakfast}

We love breakfast. And we have a few favourites that we enjoy weekly.

Homemade granola is easily the most versatile pantry item I make. Simple, nutritious ingredients that can be enhanced with so many options, every bowl is different.

Here is my basic granola recipe. I love to add different spices and seeds. Or you can make the basic granola and build a Breakfast Bar, like in the photo.

For easy mornings, especially with children, I create a Breakfast Bar with granola, dried fruit, nuts and seeds, maybe some local yoghurt or fresh fruit. It also is an amazing base for trail mix or sprinkled on ice cream!

  • 6 cups organic rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup olive oil or organic vegetable oil (coconut oil works but will give it a mild coconut taste)
  • 1/2 cup low-refined liquid sweetener such as maple syrup or honey (we try to keep it as local or Canadian as possible)
  • spices of your choice- Basic Granola is great with 1 teaspoon cinnamon

  • preheat oven to 350 degrees
  • in a large mixing bowl, combine ingredients
  • spread mixture onto a lined baking sheet
  • bake for 20 minutes, stir, bake for another 20 minutes or until toasted to your liking
  • if you want to add seeds or dried fruit, I recommend adding them raw after baking
  • if you want to add nuts, I recommend adding them to the last 5-10 minutes of baking

Allow to cool and store in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks.
